2018– Our work enhances Kansas health care. We want people to know. I hope you have seen some of our new awareness campaign materials with the theme, We Doctor Kansas. I've heard from volunteers, faculty and staff about how much they like the ads and appreciate seeing the Wichita campus in such a positive light. Dean Garold Minns, M.D. 1 We know the impact our campus makes on our students, community and state, but as Midwesterners, we don't normally bring attention when we're just doing our job. However, the campaign is not about bragging, it's about the importance of informing the public about the quality of education we provide to our students and, therefore, the high quality of health care our graduating doctors provide their patients — in addition to the other services we offer. In our last issue of Embark, I talked about our new Active, Competency-Based and Excellence-Driven curriculum for first-year medical students. After its inaugural year, we have found that students are more collaborative, can put the concepts they've learned into practice versus only reciting memorized solutions, and are retaining the information better. Changing to this new way of teaching and learning is a work in progress, but the students and faculty are partnering to identify and resolve any challenges.
