22 psychiatrists now practicing in Kansas to meet the demand, according to one estimate. Making the shortage worse, all but about a dozen of those specialists practice in the greater Kansas City area. Only four Kansas counties have at least one child and adolescent psychiatrist. No quick fix exists for the lack of access to mental health care faced by many Kansas kids. At a time when more youngsters than ever appear to be experiencing mental health issues, the state would need nearly five times the number of child and adolescent Kids' mental health care shortage spurs initiatives
