When enrollment in KU School of Medicine-Wichita hits 280 in 2028, it'll mark a milestone. Although it's a regional campus, KU Wichita will be larger than a dozen allopathic medical schools across the United States, if current enrollment levels hold. Colleen Loo-Gross, M.D., MPH, KU Wichita's associate dean for student affairs, said she heard the statistic from a colleague recently and confirmed it via data collected by the Association of American Medical Colleges. "I didn't realize we were that large in comparison to the nation's medical schools," Loo-Gross said. "That really helps put into context what that larger number of students means and the impact that it has in terms of increasing the number of physicians in the area." The school plans to boost incoming first-year classes to 70 — roughly the same size as its third- and fourth-year classes — starting with its move to the new Wichita Biomedical Campus in 2027, meaning that by 2028 all four classes will have that number.
